Northern Pygmy-Owl: In most of West, gives repeated hollow toots, delivered no faster than one every 1-2 seconds (slower than Northern Saw-whet); Pacific birds are slowest (1 note per 2+ sec), Interior West birds faster (1 note/sec). In Mexican birds reaching s. Arizona, pace can be as fast as Northern Saw-whet (2 notes/sec); notes can be paired or irregular, but sometimes more even like Saw-whet.
